The 1st place winner for this contest is
Kathy Solomon and this is her winning story:

My boys deserve to
be immortalized in a portrait because of the comfort,
encouragement and joy they bring to those around them. I have 2 tri
colored Cavalier king Charles spaniels. My dad had been battling brain
cancer and May 2008 he was given 6 months to live. He loved my boys and
always asked about them. One day, he came home with me. My boys sensed
there was something wrong with him. Both lay on his lap. Blizzard kept
rubbing his head against dad’s body. Frisbee gently pawed dad’s face.
Both looked at him with eyes filled with all the comfort, encouragement
&
joy they could give. Dad started crying. He said to me “Thank you, now
I’m ready for whatever I need to face. These boys have given me a taste
of heaven”. Everyday thereafter my dad asked about the boys. Dad
passed away June 5th 2008. I went home that night and cried and cried.
My two boys looked at me with eyes that could melt all the anguish away.
Both lay on my lap. Blizzard stood up on me, grabbed my face between his
2 paws licked and whimpered with me. Frisbee gently pawed my face and
whimpered with me. Blizzard and Frisbee stayed with me long after all
the tears were exhausted. For the rest of the night both refused to
leave my side. My boys deserve to be immortalized in a portrait for every
time I look into their eyes I remember my dad’s words “These boys have
given me a taste of heaven”
